On November 28, 2025, Italian photographer Valter Binotto managed to snap a single stunning image featuring two incredibly uncommon types of lightning phenomena hovering over the skies near Possagno, Italy. It's the kind of shot that leaves you breathless, blending science fiction vibes with raw natural power.
Binotto shared his excitement on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/DSFhlz_DKSF/), describing it as 'a rare duo lineup of Sprite and ELVE.' For those new to atmospheric wonders, let's break it down simply: A sprite appears as those eerie red, tentacle-like structures right in the middle of the frame, while the surrounding red 'flying disc' is the ELVE. Sprites themselves are pretty elusive, occurring high above thunderstorm clouds as massive electrical discharges, but ELVEs? They're on another level of rarity – think of them as the unicorns of the lightning world.
What makes ELVEs so special and massive? According to Binotto, they form when an exceptionally strong lightning bolt unleashes a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP). This pulse interacts dramatically with the Earth's ionosphere – that's the upper layer of our atmosphere, about 50 to 1,000 kilometers up, filled with charged particles that help protect us from solar radiation. The glowing red ring you see marks the exact spot where this EMP makes contact, creating a brief but brilliant optical effect. And because stars dotted the night sky in his photo, Binotto could even calculate its immense scale: standing about 85 kilometers (53 miles) tall and spanning 230 kilometers (143 miles) across. To put that in perspective, he cheekily compares it to the alien mothership in Independence Day, which clocked in at 550 kilometers (342 miles) wide – so this ELVE might be smaller, but it's still a formidable contender in the 'cosmic showdown' department.
This isn't Binotto's first rodeo with these phenomena. Binotto gets around this by using a modified camera sans the typical IR cut filter, allowing it to detect those hidden infrared wavelengths effectively.
Timing is everything here – ELVEs flash for just a split second, so Binotto records video footage, cranks up his camera's ISO for sensitivity in low light, and keeps the lens aperture wide open to let in as much light as possible. But snagging both a sprite and an ELVE in one frame? That's the real magic. These two were triggered by a single, supercharged lightning strike over the Adriatic Sea, roughly 350 kilometers (217 miles) from his vantage point. Binotto notes that this was a positive lightning bolt with a peak current of 387 kA – that's around ten times stronger than your average strike, which usually hovers around 30-40 kA. For context, positive lightning is rarer and more intense because it originates from the upper parts of thunderclouds, packing a bigger punch.
