Get ready for the 2026 Winter Olympics, where Team GB is aiming higher than ever before! UK Sport has set an ambitious goal of eight medals, which would be a record-breaking achievement. But here's the twist: they're not stopping there! The funding body is aiming for a range of four to eight medals, and they believe Team GB's athletes are more competitive than ever across multiple winter sports.
The current record of five medals, achieved at Sochi 2014 and matched in Pyeongchang, is about to be challenged. And this is the part most people miss: UK Sport is also setting its sights on the Winter Paralympics, aiming for two to five medals. The ParalympicsGB squad, which won six medals in Beijing four years ago, is expected to be competitive across various disciplines.
Chef de mission Eve Muirhead, a curling gold medalist herself, has been overseeing meticulous preparations. She believes the potential within the team is exceptionally high, despite some challenges in accessing snow and ice facilities compared to other countries.
"When I look at the class of 2026, I see a real opportunity to challenge the status quo," she said.
The medal range for the Winter Paralympics, scheduled for March 6-15, is slightly lower than Beijing 2022 due to injury challenges and limited international competition opportunities. However, the GB team is confident and well-prepared, with funding from the National Lottery and the government. UK Sport has invested over £32.5m in the current four-year cycle, with the ambition to make the UK an ever-greater force in winter sports.
So, will Team GB achieve its medal ambitions? And what about the Paralympics? The stage is set, and the world is watching. What do you think? Share your predictions and thoughts in the comments below!
