NSW New Measles Alert For Greater Western Sydney (2026)

Alert Issued: New Measles Case in Greater Western Sydney

People in Greater Western Sydney are being urged to be vigilant for measles symptoms following the confirmation of a case linked to an individual who was infectious while visiting several local spots. This person recently returned from Thailand, where a measles outbreak is currently taking place.

If you frequented the locations listed below during the specified times, it is essential to monitor for any signs of measles. Fortunately, these places do not present an ongoing risk of exposure:

  • Priceline Pharmacy in St Clair: Visited from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Be alert for symptoms until February 2, 2026.
  • Nepean Hospital Emergency Department: Attended from 7:50 PM on Friday, January 16, 2026, to 7:40 AM on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Watch for symptoms until February 5, 2026.

For a complete list of public exposure sites, please refer to the NSW Health website at NSW Health Measles Exposure Locations.

Dr. Alvis Zibran, a Public Health Specialist from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, has emphasized the importance of monitoring for symptoms if you visited these areas during the specified times. "If you start noticing any symptoms, it's crucial to consult your healthcare provider or visit a health service, including the emergency department. Remember to call ahead and inform them that you may have been exposed to measles, so you can avoid waiting in close quarters with other patients," Dr. Zibran advised.

Key symptoms to look out for include fever, runny nose, sore eyes, and a persistent cough. Typically, these initial signs are followed by a red, blotchy rash that usually starts on the head and spreads downwards within three to four days.

It's important to note that symptoms might take up to 18 days to manifest after exposure, making it vital for anyone who was at these locations to remain vigilant during this period.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be prevented through vaccination. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Dr. Zibran also reminded the community to check their vaccination status. "The measles vaccine can offer protection even after potential exposure if administered promptly. Everyone should ensure they are adequately protected against this highly contagious illness."

Individuals born after 1965 should confirm they have received two doses of the measles vaccine, especially prior to international travel, given the current outbreaks occurring in various parts of the globe.

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is both safe and effective, provided at no cost for children at ages 12 and 18 months. In New South Wales, it is also available free of charge for individuals born after 1965 who have not yet received two doses.

For children under 12 months, an MMR dose can be administered up to six months earlier if they are traveling abroad. Parents are encouraged to consult their general practitioner about this option.

Those uncertain about their vaccination history should consider getting vaccinated, as receiving additional doses is safe. This precaution is particularly crucial before embarking on any travel plans. The MMR vaccine can be obtained from general practitioners for individuals of all ages, and from pharmacies for those over five years.
