Guenther Steiner's MotoGP Debut: A Challenging Start
In a surprising twist, Guenther Steiner, the former F1 team boss, found himself celebrating a podium finish with Enea Bastianini at Barcelona last season. This momentous occasion marked the announcement of Steiner's plans to take over Tech3, a move that would later shape the narrative of his MotoGP journey.
Fast forward to the present, and the team's first MotoGP race under the 'Steiner era' proved to be a laborious endeavor at Buriram. Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini, the team's riders, struggled, qualifying 17th and 20th respectively, and failed to secure points in the Sprint race. Bastianini managed a twelfth-place finish in the grand prix, but it was a far cry from the team's initial expectations.
Nicolas Goyon, the Tech3 team manager, expressed his disappointment, stating, "This is Günther Steiner's first weekend with us, and all we could offer was a laborious spectacle." The results were particularly bitter, given that Pedro Acosta, riding for the factory KTM team, dominated with a one-two finish, taking an early lead in the world championship.
Goyon continued, "We are clearly disappointed, especially when we compare our results to the factory team. It's a double blow for us. We had good tests at Sepang, but here, we faced similar challenges as last year with our riders. We just couldn't find the right settings.
And once again, qualifying proved to be our Achilles' heel. The weekend was extremely disappointing, and we need to turn things around quickly."
In contrast, Acosta's team-mate, Brad Binder, secured points in both races, finishing sixth and seventh.
But here's where it gets controversial: With the factory KTM team dominating, how will Steiner's Tech3 team rise to the challenge? And this is the part most people miss: Can they turn their fortunes around and give Steiner a more satisfying spectacle to celebrate?
